Me, Myself and MRI |
|
Me, Myself and MRI is a 2-year sci-art project, funded by the Wellcome Trust Arts Awards, Arts Council England, SightSonic, York Neuroimaging Centre, Creative York and the Dana Foundation.
The core project team, all founding members of Geodesic Arts, are Kirsty Halliday (project manager), Mark Hildred (technical producer) and Damian Murphy (lead artist). They have worked with a group of secondary school pupils from Archbishop Holgate's School towards the creation of a touring digital portraiture gallery. Other team members include John Oxley (video artist), Kippa Matthews (photographer) and Griselda Goldsbrough (art historian). The exhibition uses contemporary digital creative technology to explore the perception of self using neuroimaging datasets, photography, video and audio. Throughout the project the young people learned about the history of medical imaging and how contemporary techniques, such as MRI and MEG, work. They also explored the ethics surrounding contemporary neuroimaging techniques and the use of biomedical data in public artworks, and the relationship between the development of medical imaging techniques, the development of portraiture as an artform and the development of the concept of the individual in society. The exhibition toured throughout 2009 - National Science Learning Centre (Feb - Mar 09), The Studio at Impressions Gallery, Bradford (Mar - May 09), York Hospital (May - Sept 09). Further tour dates for 2010 to be confirmed. The project team are now working on an interactive website to accompany the exhibition. The site includes information on the exhibition and the education project, with learning resources to support teachers and other practitioners in the development of their own creative projects. Project partners are: York Neuroimaging Centre, Archbishop Holgate's School and the National Science Learning Centre, with additional support from SightSonic, Impressions Gallery, Creative York and York Museums Trust. |
